Are humans truly the most intelligent species on earth?

25/4/2022

I suddenly got an idea for this during a break. It is truly a mystery as to why humans are able to do unimaginable things such as climb mountains, create machines, make robots and Artificial Intelligence, get in contact with a higher being(God) and even explore beyond the boundaries of our planet. Today, I'm going to be tackling the question of wether or not humans are the most intelligent species.

My initial thoughts were that humans are truly the most intelligent species on earth but then I realized a lot of things that go against this claim. Humans require education from birth in order to become intelligent and even to care for ourselves while other animals do not require such a thing to live their lives. Take a dog for example, I'm sure you've seen dogs smelling the grass searching for herbs to chew on whenever they're sick. It makes me wonder how they instinctively know what to eat when they're sick while we require years of education to even know what not to eat. Another example would be how animals seemingly know what to do since birth while we humans seemingly know nothing. Take a bird for example, a mother bird knows to hunt for worms and feed her babies while humans even neglect their children from time to time. It makes you wonder, did humans sacrifice their natural instincts in order to gain intelligence?

It begs the question, what is intelligence? Is being able to solve problems intelligence or is it the ability to think logically and for ourselves? I believe it is not what we think. Intelligence is just a concept made up by humans to distinguish the differences between each other through the means of a rather biased one-sided view. It seems to me as a lust for dominance over each other, a power-hungry concept made up by cunning and deceptive individuals from the past as a means to become the "best". Then where does that lead us? I believe the true meaning of intelligence is clouded by these things. If you were to ask a class who the most intelligent among them is, they would instantly point towards their highest scorer. As I've said in a previous post, the education system is not a proper way to distinguish wether or not someone is more intelligent than the other. Our grades do not reflect our true intelligence, I believe that everyone is intelligent in certain aspects and since we are all born fair, no matter what it is that we are good at, we will always have our weaknesses. I'm not afraid to take myself as an example, I have been given the grace to be gifted in music, spirituality, empathy and english however, I am quick to anger, egoistic and socially awkward. I believe that this greed for dominance is very much uncalled for.

So, as I sit a bit of digging, I discovered that dolphins have bigger brains than humans. As a result they are actually more intelligent than us but why do they not do things like us? If you look at it from a physical perspective, they don't have hands and are sea creatures but instead, I'd like to propose a theory that might change your perspective. I believe that humans are instead the most ambitious species on earth. Intelligent creatures don't think about climbing mountains, building contraptions or exploring space simply because they lack what makes us unique, ambition. A dolphin even with it's big brain couldn't care less about learning to breathe outside of water, all they care about is living. Humans on the other hand have so many things to think about but if you think about it, the things we think about are mostly things born from greed and competition bred by selfishness and a lust for dominance. Let's take fashion as an example, what makes things fashionable? Something becomes fashionable when people find a new strange way to dress up but what makes it trend? People have a lust for status and dominance nowadays so they always strive to be "in the swim". What started fashion? Someone just suddenly started wearing something differently and then others decided that they don't want to lose to some random stranger so from there, trends and fashion were born. Look at the world during the pandemic, even wearing facemasks can become a fashion competition. Gaming? Even worse! People go after the Playstation 5 for status, not for the features. Look at football, people support Manchester United because of the status, because of Cristiano Ronaldo, not for their love and passion for the club. How do I know? Because I support Tottenham Hotspur regardless of how badly they lose, how many times they drop out of the top 4 and then there are the Manchester United fans threatening to bomb their player's home just because they're in bad form. They even stop supporting their team altogether, hence the name "plastic fans".

Feel free to disagree but I believe human ambition and competitiveness is both to blame and also to thank for what we have today but at the same time, some things need to be worked on because it is separating us all from each other. That's all for now, thank you.
